4-Hour Florida First Time Driver (Drug & Alcohol) Course

The Florida First Time Driver Class, also known as the Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) Course or Drug & Alcohol course, is required by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles for all first time driver’s license applicants under Florida Statute 322.095 for anyone OVER 18 years old. This course must be completed before taking the Florida Permit Exam and applying for a learner’s permit in the state of Florida. This course is also required for licensed drivers under 21 years of age who have received a notice of suspension for driving under the influence of alcohol. IMPORTANT: As of 8/1/2025 You must be over 18 years old to take this course.

You can take the drug and alcohol course after your 14th birthday, but you must be at least 15 to apply for your Class E Learner’s License (restricted license).
